I'm learning how to re-invent myself. I used to be a geek... well.. I still am at heart, but I no longer make a living doing it. While I was busy playing code-monkey and data cruncher, I studied music -- a passion that I was born with. I studied voice for almost 10 years, in fact, and picked up the occasional paid gig. During this time, I managed to land a job as the paid Soprano Section Leader at a local church -- I still hold this job. In the meantime, I wanted to do more but never could figure out how to do it.
Then my daughter was born in 2006. I took the SAHM route for awhile and then transitioned to part-time consulting (in Geek Land, of course), but a little voice in the back of my head kept telling me that now was the time to take the leap. So I did. I put some feelers out and without much effort, I landed several voice students plus a directing gig for a women's barbershop chorus. Now I'm deep into building my music career - developing some marketing materials, planning for some classes to fill in some gaps, etc. I also recently started taking piano lessons again - I used to be quite good, but it's been 16 years since I last had a lesson and I haven't really played all that much in the time - so to say I was rusty was an understatement. I can say that I'm finally happy with my career and I'm excited by the possibilities.
Music is just one side of me. I love games - my hubby and I have a substantial collection of board and card games (old, new, foreign...you name it!) I just wish we had more time for game nights -- life is crazy with the career change and a toddler, so we don't get to play our games as much as we used to - either as a couple or with our friends. I also love to read. I think we have enough books in our house to open our own library. And I love hanging out with my daughter -- early on, she pushed us into learning about attachment parenting and I'm so glad we did. She and I have a great bond because of it. We're pescatarian (or vegequarium, depending on who you ask), so I guess you could say that we lean toward "earthy-crunchy", but we've still got a long ways to go in reducing our footprint and going green.
And I'm a TV junkie -- without the TiVo, I'd go crazy on some days. I'm a big fan of crime dramas -- the Law & Order and CSI franchises especially. And then there's Top Chef and Project Runway... my guilty pleasures. Plus whatever's on Food Network - how can you not like Alton Brown?!
Anyways.. that's me in a nutshell. I'm never good at writing these types of things...
